What is Step Over?
The Step Over is a simple lateral leg movement where you step or hop over a low platform, targeting the quadriceps, calves and glutes. It's an easy-level calisthenics exercise that builds lower-body strength, ankle stability and coordination with low equipment needs.
How to Do Step Over
- Set your stance: Stand beside a stable, low platform with feet hip-width, knees soft, and core braced. Keep shoulders relaxed and gaze forward.
- Place foot on platform: Step one foot onto the platform so the toes and midfoot contact firmly; weight balanced and knee aligned over toes.
- Drive over surface: Explosively push through the planted leg to step or hop laterally over the surface, swinging the other leg through in one controlled motion.
- Land safely: Land softly on the far side with knees slightly bent, absorb impact through hips and ankles, and keep chest upright to protect the spine.
- Reset and repeat: Return the trailing leg to the starting side or switch sides; rest briefly between reps and maintain steady breathing and form.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of the Step Over exercise?
Step Over improves unilateral leg strength, hip and ankle mobility, balance, and coordination. It raises heart rate for light conditioning, reinforces safe landing mechanics, and transfers to walking, hiking, and lateral athletic movements.
What are common mistakes when doing the Step Over?
Common mistakes include using too-high surfaces, rushing the movement, landing stiff-legged without absorbing force, letting the knee cave inward, and poor foot placement on the platform. Focus on control, appropriate height, and soft landings.
How can I progress the Step Over or what are alternatives?
Progress by increasing platform height, adding a lateral hop, raising speed, or using a light weighted vest. Easier: lower the platform or step slowly. Alternatives: step-ups, lateral bounds, Bulgarian split squats, and skater hops for power and balance.
